We are excited to announce that world renowned Hip Hop emcee and Blacksmith Records label-head, Talib Kweli will be joining our client roster. The Brooklyn-born entertainer made his debut in 1995 with the Cinncinati-based Hip Hop group Mood and met DJ Hi-Tek during the process. Later in the 90s, Kweli teamed up with Mos Def to form Black Star and produced the underground classic album Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star. The album was hailed by critics and acheived considerable commercial success. Today, Kweli continues to create his own music, as well as run his own Hip Hop label BlackSmith Records, which has signed other emcees like Jean Grae and Strong Arm Steady. He has been an instrumental figure in Hip Hop and continues to be one of the most popular rappers the genre has seen. He approached us about creating an all inclusive, one stop website for all things Kweli and his projects. We will be bringing all of his endeavors under one roof so fans can connect and experience all that he has to offer. Stay tuned for more news and updates on the launch.
J-Live’s Newest Release, S.P.T.A.

J-live, one of underground hip-hop’s most respected emcees, just releases his newest album, S.P.T.A. Pronounced “Spitta”, the acronym stands for “Said Person of That Ability”. His ninth release follows along the same vein as his earlier Undivided Attention EP this year. The new album features all new material from J and features emcees YC the Cynic and Lyric Jones and production by RJD2, Diamond D and Nicolay just to name a few. At Freshrr, we helped J create the look and feel he was looking for with old typewritten looking, manuscripts and materials. Adam ‘Illus’ Wallenta created the fantastic watercolor of the 3 J-Live busts that we utilized as part of the theme of both the 12″ jackets, digipaks and along with the digital materials. You can grab the new album at his online store or on iTunes and support real independent hip-hop and music.
Rawhead’s Psychopomp 12″LP

Local record label Sub-Bombin Records newest release, Rawhead’s Psychopomp, is an “aural eardrum experience” as Brooklyn-based music critic Adam Winters put it. This was the local labels first 12″ record release in their 6-year history. When they were looking for an out-of-the-box approach to the jacket design, they came to us. We shot all the photos for the jacket for Sub-Bombin. Rawhead’s childhood iron chime gave us the inspiration for the look, as well as it being used in a couple of tracks on the album itself. Psychopomp itself means: creatures, spirits, angels, or deities in many religions whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls to the afterlife. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply provide safe passage, which also gave us some ideas. Color played a crucial factor in the design of the jacket, the cool green fits the ambiance and mood of the beats that Rawhead lays to wax. If you haven’t explored Rawhead’s releases, you can check them here. You also can purchase the Psychopomp 12″ here, it comes with a free download

Beat*Shot Music head DJ Trumastr & J-Live will be hosting his 3rd Annual Beat*Shot Spins for J Dilla, A Whole Case-A-Dilla on February 4, 2011 at Red Square in Albany. DJ Trumastr conceived of the idea to honor the late, great hip-hop producer J Dilla. James Dewitt Yancey was behind many of hip-hops hits, by artists such as Erykah Badduh, Tribe Called Quest, Common, Busta Rhymes, Slum Village, The Pharcyde and many more. True passes the proceeds on to the J Dilla Foundation, which provides funding for inner-city music programs and scholarships in James’s name. Local musicians, including Glens Falls’s very own Rawstrumentals and Midas from Sub-Bombin Records will be performing Dilla tributes and tunes. Local visual artists will also be selling artwork of inspired by Jay Dee. When True got in touch with us about creating the look for this years event, we couldn’t pass it up and wanted to be a part of one of Albany’s top events. We commissioned an illustration of the producer by Corey John who created a unique perspective of Dilla, while using his unique illustration style. The design will be incorporated into web, print and shirts for the event. Local music and hip-hop fans out there in Albany on February 4, come out to Red Square to pay tribute, and have a great time for a great cause.
